Intra Uterine Insemination
Intra uterine insemination or IUI is also known as artificial insemination. This is a type of fertility treatment where the woman is given medications such as tablets and injections for development of follicles in her ovary. These growing follicles are monitored with Ultrasound scans. Once a follicle has become dominant and mature,IUI procedure will be performed at our clinic.

On the day of IUI, the man will be asked to provide a sperm sample at our fertility clinic by masturbating into a specimen cup. The sperm sample will be “washed” and filtered to produce a concentrated sample of healthy sperm. By doing so , a better quality of sperms are separated from sperm that are sluggish, non moving or abnormally shaped. These sperm are then inserted directly into the womb.

Procedure

An instrument called a speculum is inserted into the woman’s vagina to keep it open. A thin, flexible tube called a catheter is then placed inside the vagina and guided into the womb. The sperm sample is then passed through the catheter and into the womb. Bear in mind that you will need to have a full bladder for the procedure.

This process is mostly painless, although some women experience mild cramping for a short time. The process usually takes less than 10 minutes. You should be able to go home after the procedure.

Indications
Intra uterine insemination may be offered in the below given conditions:
Unexplained Infertility
Polycystic ovaries
Mild semen abnormalities

When is IUI not advised
Blocked fallopian tubes
Severe endometriosis
Low number of eggs (low ovarian reserve) – very low success rates
severe male factor infertility

If you’re in your late 30s or over 40 IVF would be a better alternative as your egg reservs will be low and the chance of achieving a successful pregnancy following IUI is also low.
