Semen Analysis – FAQ’s

This page is designed to answer some common questions you might have in relation to sperm production and semen analysis.

My doctor has advised a semen analysis test. What do I do now?

You are advised to book an appointment with our embryologist for the test. She/he will provide you with a date based on your / our availability.

What happens, when I arrive at the unit?

Please inform the Receptionist / Nurse about your appointment following which he / she shall guide you to the sample production room.

How & where can I produce the sample?

It would be ideal if you could produce your sample at our assisted conception unit as it can be processed quickly. However if you have any problems doing so, it may be possible for you to produce the sample at home. Please ensure that you collect a semen collection container at our unit. The sample must be produced directly into the container.
If you were to produce the sample at our unit you are advised to leave the sample container at the hatch provided in the sample production room, for analysis.
If you find this difficulty with producing a sample through masturbation, we can provide you with a special sperm friendly condom, which will allow you to produce a sample through sexual intercourse at home.

It is recommended that you have abstained from sex / ejaculation for at least 48 hours and this period should no longer than 7 days.

How long do I have to deliver the sample at the assisted conception unit, if I were to produce it at home?

You are advised to leave your sample in the unit between 30 -60 minutes following production.

What if I am advised to repeat my semen analysis?

The first semen analysis provides us with a snapshot of your semen quality.  Therefore don’t be alarmed if you are asked to produce a repeat sample. If a repeat is requested we would like you have it repeated in 3 months period from your first sample

How will sperms look under the microscope ?

Will I be provided with any adult material to aid sperm production?

Unfortunately we are not able to provide you with any adult material. You may bring your own if you wish so.

When will I get the results?

Following analysis, you will be informed of your results by email within 24 hours.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any further queries.
